Sandy has passed ... and left devastation in her wake - Le calme après la tempête

Well as we watched the passage of Sandy unfold on CNN safely from Montreal, we are absolutely shocked at the devastation that Sandy caused in all the areas that Maryse and I have only so recently spent time.... the beautiful 911 Memorial site, the subway and lower Manhattan. When I think of the tiny lagoon in Atlantic City that was so calm the afternoon we anchored there - now the area is completely filled with sand and debris. The coastal cities of New Jersey, that we watched slide by on our way to Cape May, are today chocked with sand and the remnants of homes and businesses.

I was delighted to hear from Norm an hour ago .... he made his way to Ambition and she is in top shape after the storm. It really appears that the entire marina has not been adversely affected, other than there is no electricity yet.

We will be back on the boat by Thursday evening with generator repairs already scheduled for 9AM Friday. With a little luck Ambition will be back in the water on Friday, a little reassembly Saturday and Sunday and we will back on our way southward by Tuesday morning next week.

Le calme après la tempête

De la maison nous avons suivi sur CNN le passage de la tempête Sandy. Quand on y pense, il y a peu de temps nous étions à New York puis le long de la côte du New Jersey, nous étions un soir ancré dans une petite baie à côté d'Atlantic City, le paysage de ces lieux est maintenant différent, il est dévasté par le passage de cette tempête.

Ambition was pulled out of the water Saturday afternoon and she will now have to fend for herself. Thanks again Norm for all your hard work! Maryse and I have decided that we will sit tight in Montreal for a couple more days - it just makes no sense to drive into the mess that will envelope the East Coast today and tomorrow.

Samedi 27 octobre

Ambition a été sorti de l'eau samedi dernier, elle est maintenant en sécurité. Nous avons eu la chance d'avoir un bon ami qui s'est occupé du bateau. Merci Norm pour tout, une chance qu'on ça!!

Nous avons décidé de rester à Montréal quelques jours de plus, le temps que cette tempête se calme un peu.

Update on Hurricane Sandy

Ambition has had sails, canvas, cushions etc all removed from the boat. Thank you Norm!!! Ambition is scheduled to come out of the water today and be stored in the yard on stands.
The latest weather information for the area has winds exceeding 50 MPH Sunday, Monday the winds will reach 60 MPH with gusts to 80 MPH lasting well into Tuesday. The factor that is more critical is that the high winds and the direction it is blowing will actually cause water to be blown out of the central part of Chesapeake where we are and pushed to the southern end of the bay. The water level may drop as much as 5 feet - Ambition is sitting now in 6 feet of water so if 5 feet disappear, she will be in the mud and laying against the pilings - not a good scenario. This is the primary reason to haul her out of the water. Due to the slow moving nature of this storm, the water level will not return until Thursday next week.
Our wishes for best luck go to all the boat owners up through New Jersey, New York and Long Island Sound.

Hurricane Sandy - Une grosse tempête, une vrai grosse tempête!

When we left Ambition on Monday the hurricane path had Sandy heading out towards Bermuda. I really did not spend much time nor attention taking extra precautions. How quickly things change - Maryse and I have been checking updates every few hours and it appears that Chesapeake Bay now stands a good chance of taking a direct hit or at the least, suffer a significant impact from Sandy.
Ambition is in a well protected and new marina but storm surge causing very high tides and high winds have the potential of substantial and widespread damage.
I am very fortunate to have a great friend living in the area who will be on board early Friday morning to remove sails, canvas covers and add extra dock lines between the pilings and the boat. If possible I will have Ambition removed from the water and set up high in the storage yard, but I expect that the full time marina residents will get priority over transient boats.
Please cross your fingers for Ambition!!!

Une grosse tempête, une vrai grosse tempête!

Lorsque nous avons laissé Ambition, la tempête Sandy était dans les Bermudes.
Nous ne pensions pas qu'elle était pour être aussi rapide, de plus elle se dirigeait directement vers la baie de Chesapeake. Nous étions dans une belle marina bien protégé mais avec la vitesse des vents qu'ils annoncaient qui sait ce qui peu arriver.

Heureusement Merrill a un bon ami dans la région, en notre absence il a pris bien soin du bateau, enlevant le génois, les canvas et s'assurant que le bateau ne risquait rien. Entre-temps Merrill communicait avec la marina pour faire sortir le bateau de l'eau, mieux vaut être trop prudent que pas assez.

A beautiful fall day - Une belle journée d'automne

Ambition and her crew enjoyed a beautiful fall day sailing on Chesapeake Bay today; the sun shone all day and the temperature was about 75F - a gentle 10 knots of wind - close hauled / close reaching for 20 miles across the bay ... life is good .. very very good. We have traveled together for weeks but today we left Sagwa - Michel and Line in Long Haul Creek near St. Michaels. We will catch up with them in about 10 or 12 days near Norfolk VA.
Maryse had her first experience tying Ambition up to pilings today - the pre-arrival stress was 100 times worse than the actual arrival. I had a very tight turn-about to accomplish when I went up the wrong slipway - I had about a 44 foot wide space to turn around Ambition ... made it without touching a boat in front or in back. Herrington Harbour North is an amazing place, there are about 700 slips and most slips have boats in them and the storage yard for the winter has 1700 boats! This place is so large that they have their own West Marine store larger than any marine store in Montreal or St Paul, incredible!! Oh yes .. they are expanding to make room for more boats in the yard.

Plugged in to shore power ... OHHHH YEESSS.  Shore showers where the hot water runs forever!
Tomorrow we pack up to get ready for our trip back to Montreal and we get to see family and friends. Ambition will await our return next Monday. Tuesday is a rebuild the generator day

Une belle journée d'automne

Lundi 22 octobre
Depuis notre départ, Line et Michel ne sont jamais loin avec leur voilier, nous apprécions beaucoup leur amitié. Au fil des jours et des semaines, nous avons developpé une belle complicité. En ce beau matin nous avons laissé nos amis dans la petite baie de Long Haul Creek pour faire route vers la marina qui acceuillera Ambition pendant quelques jours.

Il y avait un vent de 10 noeuds, c'est à voile que nous nous sommes dirigés vers la marina de Hernnington Harbour North.
Plus on approchait la marina et plus les papillons envahissaient mon estomac. Les marinas de la région ont des gros poteaux ressemblant à des piliers, les taquets sont rares pour attacher les bateaux. Il me fallait bien me concentrer afin d'éviter de faire un erreur. Merrill a bien manoeuvré le bateau lui faisant faire demi-tour dans l'allée entre les pilliers, ouf! il a fait un bref instant, je peux confirmer que l'espace en arrière ne dépassais pas 6 pouces et pour le devant à peine 3 fois cette longueur. J'étais vraiment fier de mon capitaine!!

La marina est superbe, un vrai village vacances pour plaisanciers, ils ont même sur place un magasin West Marine.  Il y a 700 bateaux au quai et ils en entreposent 1700 l'hiver, de plus ils projettent d'agrandir prochainement, différents services sont disponibles sur place. C'est grand en grand!
Les douches et salle de bain sont très propres, ce soir je prévois une longue douche chaude. :-)
Demain nous partons pour Montréal.

Mardi 23 octobre
De la route une bonne partie de la journée et un souper aux crabes chez un ami, nous avons appris comment manger du crabe à la vapeur à la façon des gens du Maryland. Un couteau pointu, une pince pour le homard et/ou un petit maillet (petit marteau) en bois, ces outils ou instruments sont indispensables pour réussir à manger ce fameux crabe de la baie de Chesapeake. Bon appétit!

Mercredi 24 octobre
Nous sommes arrivés à Montréal en fin de journée. Nous avons trouvé la maison grande. Merrill était inquiet concernant la tempête Sandy, il n'a pas tardé pour faire differentes vérifications afin de sécuriser le bateau.

A Special Treat - Un cadeau spécial!

Saturday turned out to be just a little less than Vacation Time - in fact Ambition was brightly decorated as a laundry ship! The entire lifeline around the boat was covered in towels, shirts and shorts. Ambition is not her prettiest like this, but an evil necessity none the less!
I waved to a passing waterman who was working a crabbing trot line and to my surprise he invited me to join him for a few runs! Would I - you bet!!!

I had seen at the museum what they do but this was a thousand times better. The trot line is about 1/2 a mile long with a float at each end - the line lays on the bottom with a hook every 6 or 8 feet. The hooks are baited with Bull lips which crabs apparently just love! So after the line has been on the bottom for an hour or so, the waterman lines up the boat with the line and he passes the trot line over an arm at the stern, then as he follows the line, it is pulled to the surface by the arm and he uses a stiff fishing net to scoop the crabs off the Bull lips as they pass by.



Within a couple of hours he had filled a 5 gallon bucket with crabs.

He does not do this for a living but he does enjoy steamed crabs while watching a ball game with friends! He recommended a menu and restaurant for a crab extravaganza - we now now what we are doing for dinner - St. Michael's Steak and Crab Restaurant. Michel and Line joined us and we all had a great dinner and yup everyone had crab!

Un Cadeau spécial!

Samedi 20 octobre
Ambition était revêtue de serviettes et de vêtements qui séchaient sur chacune des lignes de vie. Tout ce linge ne lui donnait pas une fière allure, mais il faut s'organiser avec les moyens du bord. On travaille en équipe, je m'occupe du lavage et Merrill de l'essorage du linge et autres vêtements.

Non loin de nous, il y avait un pêcheur de crabes qui faisait sa ronde. Il était intéressant de le regarder faire, nous étions très curieux de savoir quel type d'appât il utilisait.
Merrill le salua à son passage et le monsieur l'invita à faire la ronde avec lui. Merrill était tout excité de cette idée et il s'empressa de monter à bord, de mon côté avec l'appareil photo en main je suivais leur trajet dans la petite baie.

Il s'agit d'une ligne d'un demi mille de long avec un hameçon à tous les 6 ou 8 pieds appater avec des lèvres de boeuf.  Une fois la ligne au fond de l'eau, le crabe avec sa pince saisit l'appât espérant pouvoir le manger. À l'aide d'un support, le pêcheur lève sa ligne, il capture le crabe à l'aide de son filet, en quelques instants le pêcheur doit évaluer si le crabe est assez gros où s'il doit le remettre à l'eau.
Merrill a adoré son expérience.

Sur les recommandations du pêcheur nous sommes allés souper au St. Michael's Steak and Crab, en compagnie de Line et Michel. Un restaurant simple mais dont la nourriture est un délice et un hommage pour les palais les plus difficiles. Nous avons dégusté des crabes cakes, les meilleurs à ce jour.

Dimanche 21 octobre
L'odeur du bon café venait me chatouiller les narines, il faisait beau, une belle journée d'automne, un temps idéal pour une belle promenade. J'avais reperer une petite boutique d'importation et je voulais y jetter un coup d'oeil de près.

Une première à bord pour nous deux, des hot dogs étaient au menu pour le lunch.

Maryse's Vacation just got closer!!! - Des vacancies??

We arrived in St. Michaels, MD. N38.48..1 W77.13.2 Tuesday Oct 16th after a beautiful sail from Annapolis. We anchored in Long Haul Creek a short skiff ride from the town. Wednesday we spent the entire day at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. An absolutely fantastic museum of about 14 buildings and exhibits spread over 15 acres. The site includes some superb demonstrations and depictions of life on the bay over the last 100 years. They also have a boat reconstruction section where they are rebuilding a number of waterman boats, some as large as 80 feet long.

They also have a 1879 Lighthouse that was moved onto the site in 1966. I gave a great impression of what life would be like living as a light keeper in that era - lonely and brutal to say the least.

Well one more major job disappeared off the list Thursday.... we finished removing and replacing the caulking in the starboard side teak toe rail. The last 80 feet is 100% DONE ... YYEEEESSSS!

Well she thought vacation was closer! I dragged Maryse back into caulking mode Friday to re-bed 3 deck fittings that also dripped during the Delaware Bay adventure - Ok NOW we are done with caulking! Let the vacation begin!

Des vacances??

Mardi 16 octobre
Un arrêt pour vider les réservoirs d'eau noir, prendre du diesel et de l'eau et nous serons en route vers St-Michaels. Le vent est bon, il sera possible d'ouvrir les voiles.

Nous avons ancré dans Long Haul Creek, une mignonne petite baie à quelques minutes de St-Michaels.
Une charmante ville avec des boutiques, resto, et un musée qu'il faut absolument visiter.

Mercredi 17 octobre
Nous avons passé un bon 4 heures à visiter le Musée maritime de Chesapeake. Un vrai plongeon dans l'histoire. La vie d'hommes et de femmes de passion qui ont travaillés dans des conditions difficiles et dont plusieurs y ont laissé leur vie.
Sur le site il y avait plusieurs bâtisses que l'on pouvait visiter. Plusieurs artisans travaillaient à la restauration de vieux bateaux de pêche.

Un héritage d'histoires de pêcheurs réunit en un lieu unique.

Jeudi 18 octobre
Etant donné la belle température nous avons fait le calfeutrage du côté tribord du bateau.
Enfin, il ne devrait plus y avoir de fuites à bord.

Vendredi 19 octobre
Encore du calfeutrage, celui des écoutilles avant, et oui, il y avait des fuites là aussi.
J'ai vraiment hâte aux vacances!
En après-midi, Line et Michel allaient en ville, nous les avons suivi pour une promenade.
Une vistite dans quelques galeries d'art, dans des boutique et dans une brasserie qui fabrique ses propres bières, des saveurs différentes, un bel après-midi de belles découvertes.

So when does the vacation start??? - C'est quand les vacancies?

Maryse always has lots of questions about the boat on any given day but this was the million dollar question of today ... my sense is that between the "to do" lists and the amount of time it takes to accomplish what used to be simple stuff like laundry and grocery shopping at home, Maryse is a little discouraged. Being a kind captain and always sensitive to the feelings of my crew I responded to her question about vacation with "well it is sunny today therefore it is a perfect day to help me re-caulk the teak toe rails on the boat" - those same toe rails that let in way too much of Delaware Bays salt water inside the boat. Like all good boat projects, I expected that we would get both rails, which run the full 40 foot length of the boat done in one day. Well it is a good thing I do not earn my living estimating boat work! We started at 9:30 in the morning and by 1:30 when we stopped for lunch, we had finished gouging out 80 feet of old caulk - in other words just one side of the boat. Well the rest of the afternoon was spent by Maryse using acetone to clean the gap and me applying  the required 4 strips of masking tape - yup all 180 feet! The step of actually caulking the toe rail did not take long but I am always astounded how just one tiny dab of caulking - especially black caulking can cover soooooo much white fiberglass. I ended up with a dollop on one glove and before I knew it I had 15 feet of lifelines, three stantions, a cleat and all kinds of fiberglass to clean, not to mention my itchy nose.

So we are now 50% done, our knees have given up complaining and neither us can lift our arms to eat dinner so we just kind of lick it off the plate and then head for bed early ..... vacation doesn't seem to be the best description of today either! Perhaps tomorrow will be vacation like!

C'est quand les vacances?

Dimanche 14 octobre

Le temps était idéal, une belle journée ensoleillée, il faillait en profiter pour refaire le calfeutrage des côtés en teck d'Ambition. A deux, enlever l'ancien calfeutrage, ramasser, nettoyer, mettre du ruban collant pour masquer et protéger le fibre de verre et mettre du nouveau calfeutrage, une journée entière pour un seul côté, un travail bien fait qui devrait régler certaines fuites d'eau à l'intérieur. Nous ferons l'autre côté une autre fois.

Un petit moment bien mérité pour relaxer et détendre les muscles endoloris suivi d'un petit souper bien tranquille.

Lundi 15 octobre
Le temps était tristounet, des nuages avec de la pluie intermittente.
Merrill avait différents trucs à faire, prenant mon trailer je suis allée à l'épicerie avec Lyne et Michel. Un bon 30 à 40 minutes de marche. Je suis revenue au bateau mouillée et toute sale, mes sandales avaient fait éclabousser l'eau sale de la rue. Le petit trailer et son proprio avaient eu besoin d'une bonne douche.
Un peu plus tard en journée Michel et Line sont venus prendre l'apéro avec nous. On partirait le lendemain pour St-Michaels.

Annapolis Power Boat Show - Annapolis Boat Show de bateaux à moteur

I know I know .... you are probably wondering what on earth we are doing at a Power Boat Show. Well we did want to see how the other side plays and at the same time we did want to visit some Trawlers. Never too early to start to plan for days when we no longer like to crank winches and spend hours at 15 or 20 degrees of heel! For our non-boating friends, trawlers are power boats that are very roomy and very slow - in fact their speed through the water is very similar to that of sailboats - although they do go where you want them to go as opposed to tacking back and forth in the wrong direction like a sailboat! We saw the new Beneteau Swift 50 trawler and discover that it had been sold yesterday and is headed to Lake Champlain. The interior was finished exactly in the same style and look as the new Beneteau sailboats - very Ikea indeed. We also visited a few Azumit's - I see why my sister enjoys selling these high-end yachts, they are very european and sexy indeed. The one boat manufacturer that did impress us was the Kadey-Krogen line of trawlers - when we get grey and old this will be the number one trawler on our list - WOW - an engine room that you WALK into as opposed to crawl over, inside and outside helm stations along with port and starboard outside steering stations to control docking, the list is endless .... a very nice yacht. What really amazes me is that when you visit boats that cost well over a million dollars, it is incredible what they can give you as they take your money.
Well since power boats are still not on our shopping list we finished off the Power Boat Show with a trip to the West Marine store - Maryse wanted to buy me something very very special .... I am now the proud owner of my very own trailer .... you know those little two wheeled carts that you drag groceries down the street in - well I have a nice blue one that matches her trailer. Thanks Maryse! On the way home from the Show, we decided to give my trailer a test drive so we stopped at the wine store and loaded up the trailer.... always room for more wine on board and the trailer did it's job ... a little noisy on the sidewalk with the bottles, but there were no casualties.

Annapolis Boat Show de bateaux à moteur

Samedi 13 octobre
Rendez-vous chez Starbuck pour un café en attendant l'ouverture de l'exposition des bateaux moteur.
Des bateaux de type grand salon et d'autres pour la pêche. Une exposition bien différente de celle des bateaux à voiles. Notre coup de coeur a été pour le Kodey Krogen 52 Trawler, un bateau impressionnant et bien pensé, c'est celui qui nous a le plus impressionné.
Un fait important de la journée, Merrill a acheté son trailer, nous sommes maintenant munis de chacun notre trailer pour faire l'épicerie, à deux c'est mieux!

The fun just never stops! - Ça n'arrête pas!

After our bad news day about the generator we figured that nothing could lift spirits better than knocking a few more things off the seemingly endless 'To Do" list. We started off by taking advantage of being tied to a dock and fresh water to top up tanks and also give Ambition a much needed bath. If you listened carefully I think she giggled with delight! She is back to looking herself - the stainless shines and the world looks good. Unfortunately I can't same the same thing for Rusty - our dinghy - two jobs involved switching the Bruce anchor to our secondary and installing the new Manson as the primary anchor. So we dropped the two anchors into Rusty to do the swap. Once complete we lowered all the anchor chain into Rusty to replace the coloured wire ties that indicate the length of chain deployed every 25 feet - after a few years all the wire ties look various shades of black. Well .... the rusty chain dumped into the skiff has only added to Rusty rough looking demeanour ... one tough looking skiff! I will be looking for a stick-on tattoo for Rusty soon.
Our liferaft was returned from it's recertification and it is back installed on deck hoping never to be used!

Ça n'arrête pas!

Lundi 8 octobre

Merrill a installé le filtre pour l’eau, adieu les bouteilles lourdes et embarrassantes. Il a aussi trouvé la source d’une autre fuite d’eau dans la salle de bain d’en avant, le tuyau de la pompe du puits pour l’ancre coulait.

Un vrai colombo de la plomberie!!

En fin de journée nous sommes allés voir le démontage du boat show en compagnie de Line et Michel, c’était impressionnant a voir, on avait l’impression de voir un casse-tête géant se défaire sous nos yeux. Les voiliers et catamarans reprenait le canal l’un à la suite de l’autre un vrai défilé.

Sur la route du retour nous sommes arrêtés manger des Crab Cakes, sans aucun doute le mets le plus populaire de la région.

Mardi 9 octobre

J’avais besoin de bouger un peu, donc pendant que Merrill réparait le pilote automatique, je suis allée faire l’épicerie avec mon nouveau petit «trailer», il est vite devenu indispensable.

Mercredi 10 octobre

Un beau soleil mais une température fraîche, on en profite pour aller se promener en ville. Merrill me confie Rusty, tout c’était bien passé mais disont que mon arrivée au quai a été moins parfaite mais bon il y a un début à tout, je ferai mieux la prochaine fois!

Jeudi 11 octobre

Merrill avait réservé une place au quai pour Ambition à la marina Jobins Yacht Yard. Le technicien de Karl Maine est venu examiner la génératrice, finalement le problème de surcharge était simple à régler mais un problème plus sérieux avait été découvert. De l'eau risquait de se rendre dans le moteur, il n'y avait rien à faire, il fallait remplacer la pièce. La pièce n'était pas disponible avant plusieurs jours. Elle serait expédiée d'Allemagne. Un rendez-vous pour la réparation avait été convenu. Au fond, heureusement que nous avons eu cette surcharge simon le problème d'inflitration d'eau aurait été pire, il aurait fallut changer la génératrice. Suite à toutes ces émotions, nous avons voulu dorloter Ambition, nous lui avons donné un bon bain d'eau fraîche. Elle semblait toute heureuse.

En fin de journée nous avons pris l'apéro sur le nouveau Sense 55 de Beneteau en compagnie de l'équipe qui fait des tests de navigation. Cette équipe était bien satisfaite des performances du nouveau Sense. L'heureux propriétaire et son voilier seront sur le lac Champlain l'été prochain.

Vendredi 12 octobre
Du fait que nous étions toujours au quai, j'en ai profité pour utiliser les électros de la marina et laver les draps, les serviettes.

En fin de matinée Merrill avait voulu démarrer le moteur d'Ambition mais sans succès. Pourtant tout semblait correct mais le moteur ne voulait pas démarrer. En attendant le retour d'appel de Karl Marine,  nous avons changé l'ancre de place afin d'installer la nouvelle ancre Manson qui avait été achetée quelques jours auparavant. Une bonne équipe, moi dans le dinghy et Merrill sur le nez du bateau, à deux c'est mieux. Une fois Karl Marine en ligne, le moteur a démarré comme par magie sans problème, out!! tant mieux. Nous avons quitté le quai pour aller ancrer non loin de Sagwa

C'était en compagnie de Line, Michel et de leur invités que nous avons terminé cette journée au Dockside Grill pour un bon repas.

Generator woes - Problème avec la génératrice

Unfortunately the generator repairs will take more time and money than I had hoped. On the positive side we caught the problem before the generator was rendered completely scrap. Ambition is awaiting now a new cylinder head to arrive from Germany. We were probably less than a hours use away from a catastrophic failure the would have finished the entire unit off.
We will continue to play around in the area awaiting the parts and the install will happen while we are in Montreal so all will be good when are ready to head further south.

We took advantage of being at the dock to give Ambition a fresh water bath .... She likes to shake off the salt! The new anchor is installed and all the laundry is up to date.....life is good!

Problème avec la génératrice

Dimanche 7 octobre

Le temps était gris, il pleuvait légèrement. Richard avait donné un bon coup de main à Merrill pour solutionner ses problèmes avec son cellulaire et l’internet, un gros Merci Richard. Merci aussi à Marie-Claude pour les informations concernant l’insertion de photos, grâce à celles-ci des photos ont été insérées dans le blog.

Cependant un nouveau problème s’était ajouté, la génératrice ne fonctionnait plus, oh! Lala! Les gars ont eu beau tout vérifier, il va fallait contacter un expert, donc à suivre…

Nous avons profité de l’auto de Diane et Richard pour aller chercher la pièce pour le pilote automatique du bateau et faire un arrêt chez West Marine. Nous sommes revenus avec une ancre une Manson. Ensuite nous sommes allés dans une belle épicerie où il y avait de beaux fruits, une boulangerie, une poissonnerie, bref un vrai paradis pour les gourmands. Il s’agit d’un endroit sous le nom de «Whole Foods Market» que Diane et Richard ont découvert en arrivant à Annapolis.  J’étais bien contente quand ils nous ont annoncé qu’ils resteraient avec nous pour souper une dernière fois sur le bateau. Nous nous sommes cuisinés un délicieux repas de fruits mer, merci à vous deux. Nous étions tous heureux d’être ensemble une dernière fois, cependant il y avait un vent tristounet qui circulait dans le bateau, l’heure de leur départ arrivait. Nous ferons un souper pot Luck en famille chez mon père lors de notre retour à Montréal à la fin du mois pour le baptême de bébé Cedrick.

Annapolis MD - Annapolis Maryland les voiliers

It has been a hectic week since arriving in Annapolis last Monday. We have been anchored in Back Creek (Lat N38.57.7 Long W076.28.9) along with what seems a thousand other boats. In advance of the Boat Show we watch a steady parade of new boats head for the show. The Yacht Yard in front of us appears to do the majority of the boat prep for the show.

Put together yet one more "to do" list along with a shopping list for repairs. The autopilot repair although the most intimidating turned out to cost $2.75 tax included, at the local motorcycle shop. A new connecting master link and I was back in business - but like all boat tasks the execution is a royal pain as there's never enough room to work and always takes so much longer than planned! Anyway the autopilot is alive and well again and keeping the setscrews tight has been added to my monthly routine check list. A full supply of 3M 4000 caulking is on board awaiting a couple of nice dry days to reseal the two teak rails that run the length of the boat.

We were delighted to have our first visitors on board this past weekend – Diane, Maryse’s sister and Richard drove down to enjoy the boat show with us. We all wandered around the Annapolis Sailboat Show this past weekend, Line and Michel from Sagwa joined us as well and visited some spectacular new boats. On Saturday Albert and Guylaine from Sawyer caught up with us joined us for an apero on Ambition followed by a fantastic dinner out at Maria's.

At the show most interesting was a 65 foot Gunboat catamaran that is manufactured uniquely from composites like carbon fiber – even the sinks were carbon fiber! One major kick ass boat for sure!  A business opportunity for you Gary! Some other boats that we visited were the Oyster 62 WOW, the Oyster 47 was an older boat and less attractive. The new Tartans remain unmistakable Tartans even with the updates or twin wheels and hard biminis. Beneteau showed their new Sense models as well as the new Oceanus line. Lagoon showed off their new 58 foot catamaran - now there is probably 2 acres of fiberglass on that one to wash and wax!  

All the Hylas boats were amazing but they all suffered from very dated cockpits - small and very poor access to the deck. The Passports were also incredible especially the 54 which was the boat that blew by us on Delaware Bay while Ambition was being beaten up. The 62 was available for sale at a mere $1.3 million since it was a used boat and 5 years old. A new one would be twice that price but you would get to choose your own interior colors and stuff!

All our boat shopping items got done also, Ambition has a new primary anchor, a Manson Supreme - thanks Peter! The other thing that we bought that thrilled me, was a top quality water purifying system so that we will no longer have to buy and lug around drinking and cooking water in plastic bottles. This filter comes with its own tap and is good for more than 1000 gallons of drinking water.

Tomorrow we are headed for Jabins Yacht Yard as it appears that we have done some serious damage to the on board diesel generator - the engine runs but will not generate any electricity.

Maryse did attain a new status on board this past week that can't pass without recognition. On Lake Champlain the authorities are very lax about which channels boaters use to communicate on, using the VHF radios. The channels are assigned for specific uses and after listening to some of our Lake Champlain colleagues chatter on commercial channels for a few days Maryse could not help herself and broke into their conversations and informed them of some of the rules. She now wears her VHF Radio Police badge proudly! Unfortunately it did not have much of an impact on the users yet. The other badge she earned was her Dinghy Dock Police badge. Dinghy docks are provided free of charge by the local community and even the signs on them state that you should only tie up with one line and not lock the dinghy so that others can also have access. Upon returning from a shopping day, poor Rusty, our dinghy, had been cornered into the shallows  by some jerk who had tied his brand new dinghy sideways taking 2 cleats and then locked it so that it couldn't be moved. To make matters worse, he had raised the foot of the outboard so that is was rubbing on the inflatable tubes of Rusty – one more scar! We had to portage Rusty through the knee deep mud and reeds to get to deeper water. In her very best English Maryse left a delightful little note to the owner of the QC registered dinghy in which she severely questioned both his intellect as well as his abilities at being courteous to others. Wear your badge proudly girl!

This weekend is the Powerboat Show in Annapolis and we are going to "cross to the other side" for a day and see how they do it.

Mardi 2 octobre

Nous étions à Annapolis pour le Boat Show, il pleuvait, le temps était vraiment tristounet dehors. Tôt le matin nous avons laissé Rusty (le dinghy) à l’endroit où nous étions ancrés et nous sommes allés faire le plein d’eau.

Étant donné que la température n’était pas super, nous en avons profité pour faire du ménage à l’intérieur et préparer la venue de ma sœur et son mari.  Au cours de la journée Merrill a confirmé que nous aurons la visite de Steve, Mireille et bébé Mant à la mi-janvier.

Mercredi 3 octobre

Il y avait déjà quelques temps que je comptais les dodos, ma sœur et son mari seront avec nous demain. Il ne restait qu’un dodo.

Aujourd’hui, c’est jour d’épicerie, deux minutes en dinghy et 30 à 40 minutes de marche, sac à dos et sacs, on s’aventure à l’épicerie. Arrivée au quai de service il y a plusieurs dinghys, un gentil monsieur nous fait remarquer que l’hélice du dinghy voisin frôle le nôtre, on prend soin de déplacer Rusty afin qu’il ne lui arrive rien et qu’il soit bien protégé et on part à l’aventure nommée épicerie. Il est difficile de se limiter à quelques articles, en peu de temps le panier déborde, je suis un peu découragée en pensant à la marche de retour. Merrill savait que nous avions besoin de plusieurs choses, il me dit comme ça tout bonnement nous appellerons un taxi, un taxi quelle bonne idée me dis-je. Finalement nous avons terminé avec un panier plein, de la bière et du vin. Nous avons déposé les sacs dans le taxi et sommes revenus vers le quai où était Rusty. A notre arrivée une mauvaise surprise nous attendait, j’étais pas contente, mais pas contente du tout et Merrill non plus. Comment peut-on manquer autant de courtoisie et de respect vis-à-vis les autres navigateurs. Rusty avait un nouveau voisin qui le confinait dans un coin, l’un des côtes sur la rive et l’autre frôlant l’hélice de ce nouveau voisin.  Il s’agissait en fait un méga dinghy qui prenait toute la place. Heureusement pour tout le monde il n’y a pas eu de dommage. Ce proprio avait même utilisé deux taquets. Quand on y pense nous  sommes la veille de l’ouverture du boat show, il y avait des milliers de bateau et une bonne circulation à ce dinghy dock, pas fort, pas fort du tout. Mais bon, après un long moment, poussant, tirant, on est venu à bout de libérer Rusty.

Merrill a fait un premier voyage afin d’amener une partie de l’épicerie au bateau et pendant ce temps je regardais ce fameux méga dinghy…! Je me demandais à quoi pouvait ressemble un tel insouciant pour faire un truc pareille. Je ne pouvais laisser les choses ainsi, j’ai donc décidé de lui laisser une petite note que j’avais jugé digne de lui et de sa façon de faire, quel soulagement. Après quelques minutes Merrill était de retour, il avait trouvé que j’avais un grand sourire de satisfaction et se demandait bien pourquoi, tantôt je t’expliquerai lui ai-je dis… De retour au bateau il n’avait pas tardé à me demander la raison de ce grand sourire, je lui ai alors expliqué que je n’avais rien fait de terrible, j’avais simplement laissé une petite note digne de la personnalité de l’individu. Merrill n’en croyait pas ses oreilles.

Jeudi 4 octobre
C’est aujourd’hui que va arriver Diane et Richard, nous avons bien hâte de les voir. Il fait beau, nous irons ce matin au boat show en compagnie de Lyne et Michel du bateau Sagwa. Nous avons visité de beaux voiliers, notre coup de cœur a été le Passeport 54, wow un beau bateau!

Au milieu de l’après-midi Merrill reçoit un petit coucou sur son cellulaire, Diane et Richard étaient arrivés. Nous avons donc laisse Line et Michel continuer leur visite du site et nous sommes allés rejoindre Diane et Richard.

Nous étions comme des enfants tous heureux de nous revoir. Nous avons continué la visite du site en compagnie de Diane et Richard puis de retour au bateau pour un petit souper.

Vendredi 5 octobre

Retour au site pour continuer la visite des bateaux et commencer nos petits achats et la recherche d’information pour le frigo et autres, j’en ai profité pour acheter un petit «trailer», en fait il s’agit d’un panier à roulettes ayant un manche télescopiques tout comme les valises de voyage, parfait pour aller faire l’épicerie à pied. Merrill a acheté un filtre pour l’eau ce qui fait que nous pouvons boire l’eau provenant directement du réservoir, plus besoin de bouteille d’eau. Rencontre avec Jacques et Diane du bateau Brin de folie 2, nous les invitons à venir souper à bord, Line et Michel je joindre à nous, une belle soirée entre amis, accompagnée de bonne bouffe et de bon vin.

Samedi 6 octobre

Retour sur le site pour effectuer les derniers achats.

Guylaine et Albert du bateau Sawyer sont venus prendre l’apéro sur le bateau. Nous sommes par la suite allés souper au restaurant Italien Maria, un super souper.
